IN 1661, KING LOUIS XIV’S MINISTER SOUGHT OUT THE TALENTED PAINTER CHARLES LE BRUN TO PRODUCE TAPESTRIES FOR A WORKSHOP IN PARIS, KNOWN AS GOBELINS. AT THE GOBELINS WORKSHOP, CHARLES LE BRUN WAS UNITED WITH WEAVERS FROM OTHER PREEXISTING WORKSHOPS, WITH THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF CREATING TAPESTRIES FOR LOUIS XIV’S PALACES, RESERVING THE PRODUCT OF GOBELINS SOLELY FOR THE CROWN. WORKING FROM DESIGNS EXECUTED BY LE BRUN AND A TEAM OF ASSISTANTS, THE GOBELINS PRODUCED SUMPTUOUS HISTORY AND ALLEGORICAL SUBJECTS THAT GLORIFIED THE FRENCH KING. ONE OF THESE SUBJECTS WAS “THE TAKING OF LILLE” FROM “THE STORY OF THE KING” SERIES. IT IS THIS ORIGINAL TAPESTRY THAT RENAISSANCE’S “THE TAKING OF THE CITY OF LILLE” IS RECREATED AFTER.
THE HISTORY REPRESENTED IN THE TAPESTRY IS THE 1667, SIEGE OF THE CITY OF LILLE BY THE SUN KING, LOUIS XIV. THE RESULT OF THE SIEGE RENDERED THE FLEMISH CITY FRENCH, IN 1668 UNDER THE TREATY OF AIX-LA-CHAPELLE.
